I typed a WHOLE bunch more about HS etc. on that last post and even though I clicked save a zillion times when I published it's GONE...technology, is great WHEN IT WORKS!
ptewey~!!
Okay, I finally have a free moment between doing dishes, vacuuming and laundry to post for last week.
So last week...in the HS:
Jeff worked on his mixed media car piece and seems closer to being completion.
Sandy and Heather sold Yearbook Ads and worked on various Graphic Design projects.
One being the Typography assignment, which I will explain later.
Phillip, being our right hand man around school was busy...the new sound system came in and he marked it all and put it in the cabinet. He also hauled it to Terril for the play, set it up for us and ran it friday night!!! Thanks very much Phil!
Morgan is working on this amazing COLORED chalk pastel drawing of an eye. When she's done I will post a photo here. She also volunteered to video tape at the show Friday night. Thanks Morgan! Now we will have a video memory of the Music Man Jr. to share!
Side note: I'm really going to miss "MY" seniors...while my own daughter graduates and the thought brings tears already, the idea that the four students I have from the class of 2010 at G/T chokes me up as well. Someone remember to have a box of kleenex handy at commencement, ok?
The photography students are working on a photographic series. They were to shoot a procedure of some sort. So far we have a shaken can of soda...making a pb&j sandwich...and a yo yo trick. I wonder what else students will come up with? I have also had to create daily assignments as well. Students who either aren't on task or who finish assignments are allowed the opportunity to summarize articles about photography topics/photographs. I must say that this is not a popular activity...but I am tiring of "riding herd" and constantly monitoring both inappropriate behaviors and conversations both in 6th and 8th hours. Is it Spring? Yes. But is that an excuse? NO. People are still responsible for, and should be held accountable for their actions. Blaming someone or something doesn't solve the problem nor does it correct it. Oh, sorry...I digress.
In Graphic Design we have been created painted Typography studies. It is based on an assignment I found on the internet. The assignment discussed the works of Charles DeMuth and Jasper Johns. I then created my own version on the white board. Each student has come up with their own version using letters, their initials, their name, etc. As usual, we have some very unique and interesting works!

MUSIC MAN JUNIOR!!!!
I hope you will join us as G/T MS presents Music Man Jr. at 7 PM in the Terril Gymnasium!
It has been a privilege to be a part of this production.
This being one of my favorite musicals, I knew what to do in designing and building the set...
My hat is off to the stars Josh Petrich and Grace Skattebo and to the rest of the cast and crew!
Oh, and don't forget the "School Board" played by our own Misters' Hector, Sansgaard, Benedict
and Pedersen! You don't want to miss THAT! They are truly awesome!
Special thanks to student helpers: Phillip Schmitt, Kayla Sandbeck, Kelsey Hart and Morgan Whitney!
Ok. I am still trying to teach the children, even tho' Spring has sprung and it's very obvious, especially
amongst the HS crowd...'nough said!
We played "catch up" in 2nd Grade Art, trying to complete some projects I had on the shelf and finishing
our paper to be folded (Origami box--thanks to YouTube!) into a basket next week. Everyone PRAY!
I know I will do the majority of work on the end product, but it will be worth it!
In First Grade Mrs. Cindy Voss from the American Red Cross came to visit and students shared what
they had learned a few weeks ago and shared their thank you cards they had created for the Hometown
Heros. ; ) Watch for something in the paper soon...yes, that's them in the photo above!
We also did a draw-along of the Easter Bunny...using lines and shapes...mostly letters, like L and O and shapes
like triangles and "footballs". They will finish them while I help students fold their baskets next week!
Kindergarten...after an interesting "finger painting with pudding session" last week, we will create our own
special Easter egg designs using lines and shapes. My idea is to do a wax resist and paint over the crayon
next week. It would be really nice to have Mother Nature cooperate, as it would be great to paint them outside!

This week! March 15-18. NO School Friday!
This week we will be wrapping up the quarter, but will still begin a new assignment here and there.
In Second Grade we will be learning to create an origami basket. If you look up origami on youtube you
can make all kinds of creations and it shows you how!
First Grade students will continue their watercolor pencil/shape designs and learn the properties of the
medium to it's full extent with the addition of water and brush!
Kindergarten students will find that while we didn't catch our Leprechaun, he left behind some interesting
dust. He must of vaporized...? Well if you add milk and shake it up you can "paint" with it AND it's tasty!
The Art II men are drawing with colored pencils...vehicles seem to be the item of choice this time around.
Morgan is finishing her portrait of a young man in charcoal pencil. It is a very odd perspective study and
it has made life interesting, as I was trying to "help" with the face...not sure, but I think I need some practice.
Doesn't help that the perspective is from (so it appears) lying down and at an angle shooting up at his face.
I hope you will come to either the Art Show or Fine Arts Concert and see it there!
Sandy is working on a variety of things...engagement photos of her sister, wedding invites and programs,
graduation announcements, etc. She also did a very interesting word collage in colored pencil, which was
inspired by a song she likes.
Jeff is building me a door for the Music Man set and finishing up his mixed media piece that is of an older
model car.
Phillip is working on the yearbook. We need senior pictures!! Then he can scan them and load them up to
yearbook avenue.
Heather is one of the yearbook editors and has a knack for details. I gave her the job of putting in the portrait
pages. She is a stickler for accuracy, so I know they will be correct and complete when she is done!
My Photography students are working on a new assignment involving the use of a lot of Photoshop adjustments,
filters, effects and layer styles. In the end we will have some very interesting photos! 8 total for each student.
The Graphic Design I class will be starting a project based on works done by Charles DeMuth and Jasper Johns.
The subject is Typography (the study of type/fonts). We will be doing a more hands on piece, which may keep
everyone busy at once. Without everyone having their own computer, it becomes difficult to keep track of who is
done with what and who's "turn" it is at the computers we have with Photoshop.
We will be working on the Music Man set also when we have a free moment. That show will be Friday March 26th
at 7pm at the Middle School in Terril.
This week we will have Parent Teacher Conferences both Tues. and Thurs. evenings. If you are in the building, please stop out and visit me. It gets lonely sitting in my classroom for 4 hours! (Don't get me wrong, I always have plenty I can be doing...it's just that I enjoy visiting with parents and sharing the talents of my students with them!)
If you are looking for entertainment, my daughter's Drill Team is hosting an Invitational Showcase in the ELC gym on Saturday night at 7 PM. The G/T Dance team will be performing, and Callie Herke will dance her solo one more time! The theme is "Welcome to the Jungle" and will be quite an event...please join us if you can!
Last...I would really like to have a kiln so we can do pottery here at G/T again. If anyone would like to donate funds toward that endeavor or has ideas for how I could easily obtain one, please contact me. I am asked by students constantly if we will be getting one, and I just shake my head and sigh...sorry, kids.

Well? Well...
getting there.
At least I am not coughing up my lungs like I was 2 days ago.
I realize I had not posted my happenings for the week this afternoon after reading the Principal's Blog and checking my own.
On Monday the Art II men started looking for something to be drawn in colored pencil. They are also helping paint the set for the
MS Musical and we are still trying to accomplish a screenprint design. We had to "reclaim" two of the screens because they did not "burn" properly.
Morgan is still drawing a charcoal portrait of a young man.
Sandy tried her hand at footprints in the snow.
Phillip is working on his Channel 3 website, and now an iMovie of the concert.
Jeff has now added a second medium (watercolor) to his colored pencil drawing of a car.
The photography students are onto a new assignment involving various patterns and textures,
camera angles and then combining that with various adjustments, effects, filters and layer styles
in Photoshop. This one should be VERY interesting in the end.
The graphic design students worked on the yearbook at the beginning of the week and had a choice of 3 different hands on assignments while I've been gone.
2nd Grade. Boy...these folks get enthused! I like that. I presented the idea that we might be rennovating the library in our school. I asked them if the sky was the limit, what would THEY like to see there? To my surprise, many of the same thoughts and ideas as the high school students and the staff that I've heard from...comfortable seating, a more pleasing color on the walls, a place for stories to be acted out, a place where videos could be watched on a big screen. OH>>>and BOOKS! LOTS of NEW books!
They then had a choice to draw the space they way they see it, their favorite book cover, or a book we don't currently have that they'd like's cover. It's fun to look at these and have the students explain them. : )
1st grade. Students were given shape templates and were asked to create a visually pleasing design (I had an example from one of my HS students). They were then given watercolor pencils (which allow you to move the color around when water is applied with a brush). I was their hero...for some reason. I was called the best art teacher ever...gee, if giving them watercolor pencils is going to garner that much praise I'll do it more often. hahaha!
I have to say a little, well ok BOAST about our Fine Arts Dept. here at G/T. If you missed the Pops Concert tuesday, I'm sorry.
It was wonderful and contained performances from all the artistic "regions". Students, you are to be congratulated along with the directors/coaches. Maybe we need an encore! Thanks for all your hard work!
To my dancers...you've worked hard this season, and even tho' the weather didn't help us and we didn't get to perform at a game, your dedication shows in your performance. Our next/last performance is Saturday March 20th in Estherville at the HS for the ELC Drill Team Showcase. 7PM--Be there or be square! It's gonna be a GREAT show with at least 3 area teams as well as the award winning ELC Drill Team. : )

ONCE AGAIN
we have been denied a kiln for my program.
(Mine haven't worked and were then thrown out without my knowledge or consent last summer.)
I guess if my students want to learn ceramics they will have to drive to Spencer or Okoboji.
SAD.

Isn't it

amazing that the temperature is in the low thirties and we think it's "nice" outside!
The slow melt is probably the best, as I'm sure that there will be a HUGE lake in our
driveway soon.
So...our Portrait photography unit has been fun, and we will continue working on
portraits until the end of the year. Maybe do pets too, that's always a challenge.
Our self portrait collage assignments in Graphic Design have not been as popular
among the students as I thought they might be.
The cards created for the Red Cross (Thank you cards) are adorable, and I'm sure will
be appreciated. Now I just need to get them sent to the correct individual so they may
be dispersed. I'm pretty sure the 1st Grade has an understanding now of what the Red
Cross does and knows that if they see the symbol it means there is comfort/aide available.
(photo above)
In Kindergarten we created wanted posters! If we catch one of those sneaky little people, maybe
we'll all be RICH!
(photo above)
The second grade students learned how to create a Shamrock from a folded square. Folds always
present a problem and at least 2 (most of the time more) forget to cut so that the paper is not
cut in half. TAPE is our friend!
I hope everyone has a GREAT weekend and will possibly come and watch the GT Dance Team perform
in Armstrong Saturday night at the Showcase. Also...my daughter Graye will be dancing at the half
time of the Girls BB Tournament on Fox 44, as she is on the All Iowa Dance Team performing a pom routine.
toodles!
